Steven Bass

Steve Bass is the lead portfolio manager for the Japan Alternatives Living Fund, a specialist strategy investing in senior housing and other alternative living sectors such as student housing, single family, and co-living in Greater Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.

Prior to joining Nuveen in 2022, Steve founded AR Capital Advisors, a consultancy that originated investments for institutional investors and employed data science to enhance investment decisions. Previously, Steve led Tokyo based investment teams and served on investment committees for real estate managers including CBRE IM, AEW and Macquarie Group. From 2010 to 2018, Steve was a Partner at Orion Partners (acquired by Abdrn) where he was a member of the firm's leadership team and led its Japan business that included a series of value add funds specializing in Japan’s senior housing and care sector.

Steve graduated with a B.A. in economics from Vassar College in New York and a Ph.D. in Urban Planning from UCLA. He studied economics at Gakushuin University in Tokyo on a scholarship from the Japanese Ministry of Education and is fluent in Japanese. Recently, Steve is studying applications of data science and AI to real estate and has completed multiple certifications in this field including the Post-Graduate Program in Data Science and Business Analytics at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute's APAC Housing Council and Japan Council.
